Dr. McPhail's
areas of expertise

Growing up, Dr. Lindsee McPhail was inspired by her father, a military surgeon whose dedication to caring for others sparked her own passion for medicine. As she watched his career take the family from military service to private practice in eastern North Carolina, she knew from an early age that she wanted to follow in his footsteps. Today, she combines that lifelong calling with nearly two decades of surgical experience, delivering compassionate, individualized care while utilizing the latest advancements in minimally invasive and robotic surgery.
Dr. McPhail attended the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill as a prestigious Morehead Scholar before earning her medical degree from the UNC Chapel Hill School of Medicine. She is a board-certified general surgeon with fellowship training in both minimally invasive and bariatric surgery.
Based in Asheville, North Carolina, Dr. McPhail practices at Mission Hospital and Asheville Surgery Center, where she has helped advance robotic surgery in the region. She was the first surgeon at Asheville Surgery Center to perform robotic hernia repair, pioneering this technology in Western North Carolina and expanding access to minimally invasive surgical options for patients.
Her clinical expertise includes robotic and minimally invasive hernia repair, complex abdominal wall reconstruction, paraesophageal and anti-reflux surgery for hiatal hernias and severe reflux disease, bariatric (weight loss) surgery, gallbladder surgery, anorectal procedures, and soft tissue surgery. She is committed to providing personalized treatment plans using the most advanced surgical techniques to help patients achieve the best possible outcomes.
Dr. McPhail is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons and an active member of the Society of American Gastrointestinal and Endoscopic Surgeons (SAGES). She is also a participating surgeon in the Abdominal Core Health Quality Collaborative (ACHQC), a national registry dedicated to improving outcomes in abdominal wall and hernia surgery, and has been recognized as a verified Surgeon of Quality for her commitment to exceptional patient care and surgical excellence. She is recognized throughout Western North Carolina for her expertise in advanced robotic hernia repair and complex abdominal wall reconstruction.
When she isn’t caring for patients in the operating room, Dr. McPhail enjoys taking full advantage of the mountains she calls home. An accomplished endurance athlete, she has completed numerous marathons and Ironman triathlons and enjoys trail running, mountain biking, and exploring the scenic trails of Western North Carolina. She also loves spending time with her children and, while she’ll be the first to admit cooking isn’t her favorite hobby, she enjoys discovering Asheville’s exceptional local restaurants and vibrant food scene.
